Things To Do This Summer!

Happy Summer! As today marks the first day of Summer 2013, I would like to share with you a few ideas of things to do this summer!

  • Go to the beach- if this is something you do every year, check out a different beach!
  • Go on bike rides!
  • Paddleboard Yoga
  • Go to the Aquarium
  • Sit outside on a sunny day with a sketch pad, and draw your view. It does not matter how well you draw! Just have some fun!
  • Go swimming in the nearest pool
  • Take a random weekend road trip!

Family Culture

I am a die hard soccer fan. Once I moved to the U.S., I was always surprised when a soccer game would come one, or people did not even know that the World Cup was taken place! To this very day, my friends will ask me to hang out but if a soccer game is on...I will have to turn them down unless they can promise me they will put the game on. As they roll their eyes at me and complain about how can I possibly love soccer; I wonder to myself, "How can you not love soccer!" I've come to understand, I have my culture and my family to thank. Whenever there is a soccer game, from as long as I can remember, we have family gatherings with chicken wings, tacos, and for those of age a Corona beer. This is what soccer means to me: family, food, and the entertainment of the sport. Family, culture, traditions, and experiences truly shape who you are. People may never understand this factor until they have to experience a new culture and eventually acculturate.

The Value of Art

The painting below, has a sentimental meaning to me. I made this painting in fall of 2007. This painting represents the beauty of nature and the season changes. It also represents the bond between my Goddaughter and I. As symbolized, the baby is gripping my finger strongly. This does not only represent our strong bond to this very day, but also, her trust and security in me. I used yellow for the curtain for a contrast among the rest of the painting. This painting also represents who I am. I have strong love for art, children, and lending a hand to those in need.

What a Good Ad Does for You!

The ad below, for Coca-Cola, in my opinion represents a well designed advertisement. The imagery as well as the colors speak for themselves. Its message argument, as represented by the image, is how desirable and refreshing a Coke is, that even a penguin would want one. The peripheral cues include the beautiful beach scenery, the beach environment, and the comedy of the penguin not only drinking a Coke, but stealing it as well. I believe the message argument, as stated above; make the advertisement persuasive in the form of fulfilling a want to reach a satisfied stage that everyone, including a penguin, craves for. The additions of the peripheral cues give me a sense of emotion since I love the beach. Also it makes me feel as if I were to drink a Coke I would feel refreshed and as close to the beach environment as I can possible be at the moment. It is images like these that bring out my love for advertisement. The use of photography and art related features and tools in images like these are what bring out my love for advertisement.

One Person Can Make a Differece!

I've encountered many stories, videos, and articles of how one person's idea to try and help a little turns into a huge idea, that helps a lot of people. There's the story of Alec. Alec's father found the need for him to learn that there are those that do not even have anything to eat. From a few homeless people to feeding so many homeless people and opening an organization (http://ow.ly/lOqqJ ). His story is one of many that have inspired me and motivated me to keep believing that it can take one person, one action, to make a difference in the world. It does not take a lot of money, or a lot of people. All you need is the right mind set and a kind heart. I have shared with you the link to Alec's story and a video of another example of how even you can make a change!

Basics of a Non-profit

I had a few challenges the past couple of days. I had to make a decision of whether or not I want to put myself in a some what dangerous situation to get the experience of working for a non-profit. Although I learned a few lessons through this, I realized a lot of people do not know what a non-profit organization or business really is. Someone insisted that I should risk my safety because if I want to work for a non-profit or run my own in the future, I will have to be in dangerous cities and environments. This is not the case at all. A non-profit organization comes about with the intentions of other than generating money for yourself. A non-profit can be a public school, a charity, a church, a museum, even a university like Saint Joseph's University. Sure, my plan is to do something later on in my life when I have the funds to help those that are less fortunate material wise. This does not mean that I will have put myself in dangerous environments in order to help others. In the business world aspects non-profits are most likely organized under state law and some states exempt the organizations from state tax. These are the biggest differences from a profit organization. With this being said, I sure hope people start understanding the concepts, and true meaning of a non-profit organizations. The point is to give back and make a difference no matter where you are located.
